Innoventions (Epcot)

Say hello to Tom Morrow 2.0, the "host" of Innoventions West in Epcot. This little animatronic figure is way high up in a pipe and is easy to miss if you aren't paying attention. He talks, tells you whats going on in Innoventions, makes a few wisecracks, and is actually pretty funny.

Disney-MGM Studios

Topping out at approx. 122 feet tall, the Sorcerer Mickey hat is a tribute to Fantasia, Walt's signature movie, and at the same time a perfect compliment to Spaceship Earth, Cinderella's Castle, and the Tree of Life as the centerpiece of the parks. The hat was added to the Studios for the 100 Years of Magic Celebration in 2002-2003. Prior to the hat being added, the Studios did not have a signature "weenie"; Walt used the term weenie to describe something that draws people to a specific area, such as the Castle, the Riverboat whistle (Frontierland), the smell from the bakery on Main Street, etc.

Cinderella's Castle

Are you kidding me? It took me almost a YEAR to post a night time photo of Cinderella's Castle in the Magic Kingdom? Simply put folks, if you "get it" when it comes to Disney World, this is as good as it gets. Simply beautiful, simply stunning. If you don't "get it", this is as bad as it gets...getting excited about a fake castle in the middle of Florida.

I happen to think I "get it" and absolutely love the time I get to spend photographing this beautiful structure, all decked out in every changing stage lights. I have been hooked ever since my 1st trip when I was 8 years old, and being able to see things like this are the reason why. I KNOW it's fiberglass and steel; I KNOW it's only a facade over a show building; I KNOW it's only about 1/2 as tall as it appears due to forced perspective (a technique in which the Imagineers built the 1st floor 100% to scale and then gradually reduced the scale of the upper floors, making it look much taller than it is); but I don't care. To me, this is fun and wonderful and that's all that matters.

Mickey's Jammin Jungle Parade (Animal Kingdom)

MJJP (for short) has been running at Animal Kingdom since 10/2001. This really neat and quirky parade runs for about 15 minutes and features over the top sights and sounds and a really catchy soundtrack. The classic Disney characters are joined by a cast of abstract animal floats, street performers, and even some guests who are selected to ride along on some of the floats. This one is not to be missed, although I think Animal Kingdom is way hot and humid so you might want to find a shaded area.

Wishes!

I love watching Wishes from the beach at the Polynesian Resort. Nobody bumping into you or standing in front of you, and just a quick walk or Monorail ride from the Magic Kingdom. Nothing better than sipping a **beverage of your choice** while laid out on a beach chair watching the fireworks. As you can see, the view is quite extraordinary and you can see the Grand Floridian and Contemporary perfectly as well.

Is there any interest out there for...
...me to design some print material featuring the photos from this blog? Does anyone have any interest in calendars, books, posters, etc.? I am considering getting some of these things made and making them available for sale -- is anyone interested?

I have created a really quick rough mockup of what would be a 13x19 inch poster of the photos in my blog...click the image below to be taken to a much high resolution version so you can study the detail. Note that I made this very quickly and there will be images that are not in the final version, such as background images and logos , etc. that are in this preview.

I am also working on making animated DVD photoshows with music from the attractions that feature the photography in this blog. The videos are full-screen, animated (pans/zooms/transitions) and DVD quality. If I can find some way to post a sample video I will. Is anyone interested in this?

Please let me know, either by commenting on this page or, if you prefer, SENDING ME A DIRECT EMAIL. I am eager to see what the response to this may be. Thanks for all of your continuing support.
Tim

My Photo Gear...
Since many of you folks have asked recently, I will tell you what I take with me to the parks...there are no tricks or super fancy equipment, just plain old technique and some serious time photoshoppping afterward.

  • Camera - Canon EOS 20d
  • Canon EF 28-135 IS/USM
  • Canon EF 75-300 IS/USM
  • Canon EF 50 1.4 USM
  • Canon EF 28 1.8 USM
  • Canon EF-S 10-22
  • Epson P-2000
  • Quantaray Backpack
  • Slik Sprint Mini Tripod

Yeah, it's a lot of gear and sometimes that backpack weighs a ton, but I have a wonderful wife who is supportive of my hobby and passion for photography. Her patience while I am trying to nail that killer shot is something that I will be forever greatful (especially when I am taking yet *another* photo of the Castle).

Arribas Brothers (Magic Kingdom)

Arribas Brothers on Main Street USA is a really neat little store in which you watch skilled artisans make all kinds of crystal figures and sculptures. We had our wedding cake topper made for us there. Steve the artist did a wonderful job and it was jaw dropping how skilled he was with just a simple Dremel (rotary tool). I would stand there and watch these guys every time I go to the MK.

Magic Kingdom

These are the Mickey and Minnie topiaries that are near Cinderella's Castle in the Magic Kingdom, Florida. WDW is simply loaded with little touches like this, things that you may not notice on your first trip, but the more you look, the more you find simple pleasures like this.

IllumiNations (Epcot)

IllumiNations is the nightly firework/laser/musical spectacular at Epcot. I absolutely LOVE this show, although my beautiful wife doesn't particularly care for it at all. The show occurs nightly over the World Showcase lagoon and you simply MUST see it on any Disney trip. If you can get a spot right on the railing, all the better.

Clocking in at just under 13 minutes, the show features 1105 rockets and shells, 19 torches all around the World Showcase Lagoon, an infernor barge that explodes into a giant ball of fire, lasers mounted on the roofs of the various pavilions, and the world's first LED covered globe which cruises out into the center of the Lagoon while depicting various scenes of culture and humanity.

The music is moving and inspiring, and I get chills every time I hear "We Go On" while in the parks. It's one thing to listen to the MP3, but hearing it live is just awesome. (Oh, by the way, did I mention that I really like this show?)

Inside the Magic Podcast...

Many grateful thanks to Ricky Brigante from the Inside the Magic Podcast for mentioning this site on the Inside the Magic Podcast, show #55 for April 23,2006. For those of you who don't know what a Podcast is (from Wikipedia)...
Podcasting is the distribution of audio or video files, such as radio programs or music videos, over the Internet using either RSS or Atom syndication for listening on mobile devices and personal computers. The term podcast, like "radio", can mean both the content and the method of delivery. Podcasters' websites also may offer direct download of their files, but the subscription feed of automatically delivered new content is what distinguishes a podcast from a simple download or real-time streaming (see below). Usually, the podcast features one type of "show" with new episodes either sporadically or at planned intervals such as daily, weekly, etc. In addition to this, there are podcast networks that feature multiple shows on the same feed.

Podcasting's essence is about creating content (audio or video) for an audience that wants to listen when they want, where they want, and how they want.
The Inside the Magic Podcast is the 1st Orlando-based Disney Podcast. Ricky takes you through the latest Disney Theme Park News, Events, and Rumors. This weekly podcast covers anything related to Disney, from the local parks to distant lands. It really is a must-listen for any serious Disney Theme Park fan; he has contests, listener submissions, and all kinds of good stuff. So, go over to Inside the Magic Podcast and check out his site, or better yet, subscribe to the Inside the Magic Podcast via the iPod Podcast Directory. Best of all, the price is right...it's FREE!

The Enchanted Tiki Room - UNM (Magic Kingdom)

This is the exterior of the show building for the Enchanted Tiki Room - Under New Management in WDW Florida. The building is obviously different from it's Disneyland counterpart and so is the show content. To those who haven't seen UNM, the original Tiki Room show was getting a little stale so they decided to see the Tiki Room to Zazu and Iago and let's just say, nothing quite goes according to plan. The show starts with a debate over talent with Morris and William and continues right on to the main show's finale.

What is this?

Ok, so it's time for my 1st ever Tim Devine's Disney Photo Blog contest! This one is so easy, it's almost ridiculous.

Here are the rules:
1. Send your guess of what this picture is (and there is ONE SPECIFIC answer using a famous Disney phrase). Tell me the phrase and what attraction this if from by sending me an EMAIL You MUST use the specific phrase. HINT: This is located somewhere in WDW, Florida and think about WHERE you are when you see this.
2. Leave a little comment (say hi, tell me how much you like or hate the site, tell me your favorite attraction, etc.) in the new CBOX on the right side of the screen. Please do not put your answers in the CBOX.
3. This contest will end Thursday, 4/27/2006 at 11:00pm Eastern Standard Time.
4. I will pick one winner at random from all correct entries who will get to pick (3) photos from the blog archives and I will send that person a 4x6 postcard print of the (3) photos they picked. Exception -- You can't have a photo of my son :)
5. Good Luck!

New Features...
For starters, you will notice that I have reformatted the screen area to make better use of real-estate. I received a suggestion that the photos could be a little bigger so I will be experimenting with posting photos that are slightly larger in size.

Secondly, if you look to the right side of the screen under my profile, you will see a simple form to fill in with your email address and you will be emailed when a new post is created on this blog. Thanks to Bloglet.com for this feature.

I have also added a C-Box on the right side of the screen under my profile. This is a neat way to add a quick little message, so be sure to use it often. I love seeing feedback from fans of the site. Finally, there is a ClustrMap on the bottom of the right side so we can all see where viewers of the blog are coming from.

Please be sure to sign up and check back often. Plenty of new content coming soon!

All done with the Pirates...
Ok, so that's about it for the POTC ridethrough. I didn't post EVERY photo that I have from POTC because we would be here all day. I am going to go back to posting something at random for a while but if you have any ideas on what you would like to see on this site, please drop me a comment and let me know. What photo is coming tomorrow? You'll just have to stop back in and see....

Best Disney Podcasts...
If anyone out there is listening to Disney podcasts, here are some of my favorite ones. I subscribe to these and listen to them all the time. I have listed them with a link to their respective site, just click on the title to get there. They are all listed on the iTunes podcast directory (you dont need an iPod to use iTunes) as well, and will automagically download new episodes when they become available.

Inside the Magic, with Ricky Brigante
A Window to the Magic, with Paul Barrie
Mouse | Tunes, with Lou Mongello & Nathan Rose
Walt Disney World Plugged In, with David Brady (Official WDW Podcast)

Anyone who listens to Disney podcasts should check these out and support the guys who put a lot of time and effort into these podcasts. If anyone has other suggestions, please let me know and I will check them out as well.

PS. I haven't gotten a whole lot of comments on the photos lately, so please make me feel important. The hits keep coming but the comments are down, so GET TO WORK!
